NEW PRODUCTION
Truth and lies are forged in fire.
Fear stalks the villagers of Salem. Some say witchcraft is responsible for strange happenings. But when accusations and paranoia take root, a deadly chain of events unfolds. When everything is at stake, what is the cost of the truth—and who pays the price?
Artistic Director Francesca Zambello directs Robert Ward’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award®–winning opera based on Arthur Miller’s play. Music director Robert Spano transports audiences into the heart of the 17th-century Salem witch trials with Ward’s lush score, capturing a community gripped by fear as an allegory for the 1950s Red Scare. Anchoring the drama is Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges as Elizabeth Proctor, who unites with powerhouse American baritone Ryan McKinny as John Proctor.
When Zambello’s production of The Crucible opened at Glimmerglass, The New York Times called it “a revelation” and “darkly up-to-date in its message.”
